Our Leadership
Bariatric Technologies was built where real clinical experience meets the practical work of bringing products to life. At its core, the team shares a simple goal: serve patients well and build something that lasts.
Dr. Mary Forhan, PhD
CEO & Chief Product Officer, Co-Founder

Mary Forhan has spent more than 30 years working alongside people living with obesity — as a clinician, researcher, and advocate. Trained in occupational therapy and rehabilitation science, she's seen firsthand the challenges that come with significant weight loss: limited mobility, ongoing discomfort, and a lack of practical support.
Those experiences led her to found Bariatric Technologies. Over the years, she kept hearing the same concerns — from difficulty walking to fear of falling and persistent pain. It became clear there was a gap, especially when it came to non-surgical options for managing excess skin and tissue. The company was created to address exactly that.
Mary is a Professor at the University of Toronto and previously served as Scientific Director at Obesity Canada. Her work has been recognized by organizations such as Obesity Canada, the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, and McMaster University.
Her vision is straightforward and personal: help people feel more comfortable in their bodies so they can fully engage in life — during weight loss and long after.
Bemal Mehta M.Sc., MBA, P.Eng.
President & COO, Co-Founder

Turning a strong idea into something that actually reaches patients takes more than insight — it takes disciplined execution across operations, finance, and go-to-market strategy. That's where Bemal Mehta comes in.
Bemal has been connected to the obesity field for over a decade. He spent 12 years on the board of Obesity Canada, including serving as Chair during a period of major change in treatment — from the early days before GLP-1 therapies to their rapid adoption. He also stepped in as Acting Executive Director during a key transition, giving him a clear view of both patient needs and the gaps that remain.
His business background spans sales, marketing, operations, and strategy, with a focus on building and scaling new ventures. He's led internal startups within larger organizations, working within real constraints to assemble teams, set direction, and deliver results.
With an engineering background, Bemal brings a practical perspective to product development — how something is built, how it performs, and how it holds up in real use. That mindset has been especially important in shaping a specialized product like the ActiveMX Base Layer.
He joined Bariatric Technologies because of the rare combination it offers: strong clinical credibility, a clear unmet need, and a product that can make a real difference. His focus is on building the operational and commercial foundation to get that product into the hands of as many people as possible.

Why We're Built This Way
Bariatric Technologies works because it blends two strengths. On one side, there's deep clinical insight into patient needs. On the other, there's the ability to build, launch, and sustain a real product in the market.
Mary and Bemal have been part of the same field for years — she as Scientific Director of Obesity Canada, he as Chair of its board. They've seen the same shifts, faced the same challenges, and identified the same gaps from different vantage points. In many ways, this company is a natural extension of that shared experience. That balance isn't accidental — it's central to how the company operates, and ultimately, why it exists.
